First of all, this is not a method book that teaches you how to play rock music on the cello, nor is it intendedto teach you about rock music itself. Instead, this collection is designed as a practical tool to help youexplore different playing styles and techniques, and ultimately integrate them into your own musicalpersonality.Of course, we all need to practice technical exercises and study the great masters of classical music—believe me, even the coolest rock cellists started there. But this book is meant to give you early access toa variety of modern playing styles so that you can begin developing your own personal voice on the cello. The pieces themselves are intentionally kept short, direct, and efficient. Think of them as building blocksfor your own creativity. You can take ideas from these etudes and expand them into original songs. Forexample, you might use the introduction, verse, and refrain from one piece, then create your own solobefore returning to the refrain, adding another verse, and finishing with your own ending. Just like that, atwo-minute etude can grow into a fully developed composition. Let your inspiration guide you! Before that, however, you should aim to master each etude thoroughly. The first cello part is the easierone, staying mostly within first through fourth position, with the occasional harmonic above. The secondcello part is slightly more advanced. In many cases, it functions as rhythmic and harmonic support for themelody, while also featuring occasional solos that may extend into thumb position.Depending on your abilities and dedication, I would roughly recommend six months to one year of playingexperience for the first cello part, and one to two years for the second.Above all, enjoy making cool music—hopefully just as much as I enjoyed writing these pieces!
